RUMA NATIONAL PARK

"Dramatic Valley of the Roan Antelope, Oribi”

Ruma was first gazetted in 1966 as Lambwe valley game reserve and acquired national park status in 1983.It was established mainly to protect the Roan Antelope which does not occur anywhere in the country.

 

Its situated in Lambwe valley in south Nyanza.140km from Kisumu.10km east of lake Victoria and south west of Homabay.It lies on the flat floor pf the lambwe valley,bourderd by the kanyamaa escarpment to the south east.The soils are largely black cotton clay settled with small scale farmers with a huge grassy pasture land surrounding. A visit to this region will be a perfect opportunity to be have a taste of western Kenya region with an extention to kisumu city museum, simbi and kit mikayi along Bondo road in seme and Ndere Island (60 km from Kisumu Airport).


Ndere mean “meeting place” in the language of local Luo tribe according to the luo Folklore, Kit mikayi, mother of the tribe rested up near Ndere after a long journey south down the Nile Valley.

 

For a visit, Prihme safaris will arrange for accommodation at the facilities available at Sigama Hills, Fig Tree or in Kisumu city, Kisii town.

Elephants At Shimba Hills

MWALUGANJE

It lies North –West of Shimba Hills, watered by the Manalo River, a favorites haunt of big tusker male Elephants and where they take their entertaining mud bath. The Area is surrounded by thick forest a reserve opening up a connecting corridor for the elephant trek south en-route to Shimba Hills.

The conservation area is recognized for its role in the development of young independent male Elephants in their demanding life ahead. The terrain is diverse, riverine forest gives way to deciduous woodlands and dry baobab bush land; here the rare Sakole scops Owl can be sighted
